How to make a song book with Super CD+g's

Have you spent many hours typing your songs to create a karaoke song book? If you have alot of discs it can take a long time, especially when you type like me - 2 fingers! Super CD+g's hold up to 1234 songs on each disc - imagine the typing!

This is a step by step guide to show you how to easily create your own song books, without typing 1 song! This procedure is only applicable to Super CD+g's. You will need a PC with a DVD ROM and Excel.

Super CD+g's are fantastic. Every Super CD+g disc has a file on it that has all the track number, title and singer data. Each bit of data is delimited by a "#" character. The following procedure uses Excel to split the data into columns to allow you to sort & publish your song books.

1. Extract the song list from the disc

Put the Super CD+g disc into your PC DVD ROM drive. If "Autorun" is enabled on your PC then the CAVS PlayCDG menu program will open. Close this CAVS program.

Now open "My Computer" or your favourite directory folder navigation program. Right click then "open" on the DVD ROM drive. Right click then "open" the directory folder called "DiscCdg". Double click on the file named "LIST.txt". This should open the file in Notepad (or whatever program is configured to edit ".txt" files). You should now have all the songs displayed.

2. Transfer the song data to Excel

Open Excel spreadsheet program on your PC. Go back to the notepad window. Click at the start of the song list. Now scroll to the end of the song list. Holding down the shift key, click after the last character of the last song. This should have highlighted the entire song list. Copy all the highlighted text to the clipboard by holding down the Ctrl and then pressing C. Now you have a copy of all the songs on the clip board. Open the Excel window and paste the song list by clicking in the top left hand cell (box) and then holding down Ctrl and pressing V. Now all the song text is pasted into your excell spreadsheet.

3. Converting text to columns

Now we need to show Excel how to split up the song text into song number, title and singer. Make sure all the songs are still highlighted. Go to menu "Data", "Text to columns" & click it. "Convert text to columns wizard" should open. Select "Delimited" then "Next". In Delimiters, check the "Other" box and enter the "#" character in the box. As soon as you do this, the text should split up into the proper columns in the Data Preview box. If it doesn't you have done something wrong.

If all looks ok then click "Next". On the next screen, click "Finish" and you should now have all your song data in 3 columns.

4. Sort & publish

Now that the song list is in columns, you can sort it by song number, title or singer. You can print it or cut and paste into other programs. How easy was that? I hope this has been of some help but if you have any problems contact me! If you want a Super CD+g player look here, if you want to see what Super CD+g discs are available look here.
