We are always being contacted by people asking questions about whether they can make copies of karaoke discs or rip tracks and make compilations or play karaoke songs from their hard disc or CAVS JB99. The following FAQ's are our interpretation of the current copyright laws in Australia.

1. Can I make a backup copy of my karaoke disc?

Apparently in the USA karaoke home users are allowed to make a backup copy of their karaoke discs for home use only. They are not allowed to make any copy if they use it for commercial purposes or gain money from its use.

In Australia the law is very clear. You are not allowed to make any copy of the karaoke disc for any purpose - home or commercial use.

2. Can I make a copy and use that if I also carry the original with me?

No. Read FAQ #1 - no copies for any reason.

3. Can I copy tracks from my karaoke discs to a CAVS JB99 or JB199?

No. By copying tracks from the original to the CAVS JB99 hard disc you end up with 2 copies and you only paid for one.

4. Can I buy karaoke tracks and have them pre-loaded onto a CAVS JB99?

Yes. Karaoke Suppliers sometimes have agreements with Karaoke disc manufacturers to legally pre-load tracks onto CAVS JB99's. The agreement has strict requirements to prevent 2 copies to exist for the 1 song purchased. Song updates can also be purchased by the customer but must only be loaded onto 1 machine per copy.

5. Can I copy legally purchased tracks from one CAVS JB99 to another?

No. That is illegal as you end up with 2 or more copies of the same track and you only paid for one.

6. Can I copy my karaoke discs to my PC?

No. Even if you carry the original discs with you, it is illegal as you end up with 2 copies.

7. Can I buy a Super CD+g and rip the songs to my PC?

No. Apart from it being illegal, commercial Super CD+g's are encoded and cannot be ripped to PC.  There is software that allows you to create your own Super CD+g disc using CDG songs. The Super CD+g discs they create cannot be played on your PC but can be played in a CAVS Super CD+g compatible player. However, the ripping of the tracks from your CDG's before you create a Super CD+g is illegal.

8. Can I buy digital karaoke songs for my karaoke software player or CAVS USB player?

Yes. We sell the entire Sundown Karaoke library for digital use. Capital Imports also has their library available in mcg format. You can also buy legal songs from the CAVS download site. You must keep the proof of purchase documents and licence with the hard drive at all times.
